Where do we start our elevation

Hi Class,

The sill height datum is 0.0 off of the front of the three french doors. Our level grade is -12.25 that is where the cherry tree is. We can't add or take away much soil from there or it will kill the tree so I am assuming that is going to be the grade I work off of. Question does that mean I will

go down 22.25" to get to grade? (0.0 + -12.25)

Next question. Are my notes correct in that I have to make one step down 8" and then I can start

my stairs?
